But the challenge doesn\u2019t end there\u2014each group will also create and present a short, 2-minute performance that features their new instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building and performing with their instrument lets students experience how creativity, communication, and problem-solving come together. Just as important, it gives kids a chance to practice speaking and presenting in front of others\u2014building confidence in their voices while having fun experimenting and surprising themselves with what they can create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Challenge<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Using only 4 materials, work together as a team to design and build an instrument that can make at least three distinct sounds. Then, create a short performance that shows off your instrument, your creativity, and your teamwork skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Materials\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose any <strong>4 items<\/strong> from the suggested materials list below to create your instrument. Think about how each material might make sound\u2014can it be struck, plucked, blown, or shaken?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>\u2022 Plastic bottles<br>\u2022 Rubber bands<br>\u2022 Cardboard tubes<br>\u2022 Metal spoons<br>\u2022 Paper plates<br>\u2022 Aluminum foil<br>\u2022 Straws<br>\u2022 Popsicle sticks<br>\u2022 String or yarn<br>\u2022 Tape or glue<br><br><\/td><td>\u2022 Paper or cardstock<br>\u2022 Binder clips<br>\u2022 Clothespins<br>\u2022 Boxes<br>\u2022 Buckets<br>\u2022 Cans (clean and empty)<br>\u2022 Plastic jars<br>\u2022 Sticks or twigs<br>\u2022 Pebbles<br>\u2022 Shells<br>\u2022 Leaves<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Team <\/em><\/strong><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: Scissors may be used for designing and building, but may not be included in your solution. <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Facilitator Note:<\/strong> For younger students, you may want to guide them toward exploring how different objects can work together to produce different types of sounds, such as something hollow, something stretchy, and something hard.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time Limit<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams will have <strong>20 minutes total<\/strong> to complete the challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>15 minutes<\/strong> to choose materials, design, build, and test the instrument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5 minutes<\/strong> to plan and practice the performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scoring (Up to 100 points)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>5 points for each distinct sound your instrument makes (Up to 15 points)<br><strong>B. <\/strong>Up to 20 points for the creative use of materials in your instrument design<br><strong>C. <\/strong>Up to 20 points for the overall effectiveness of your presentation (how everything comes together, including the instrument, the sounds, and the story)<br><strong>D. <\/strong>Up to 20 points for the creativity of your performance<br><strong>E. <\/strong>Up to 25 points for how well your team works together<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflection Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What type of instrument did you make? How did you work together to make it create different sounds?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the most challenging part of the activity, and how did your team handle it?<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did your team decide what to include in your instrument and your performance?
